Whynot is an unincorporated community in Randolph country, north Carolina, United states, and is included in the piedmont Tried metropolitan region.
Whynot was first settled in the 18th century by German and English people, along with nearby communities of Erect, Hemp, Lonely, Stress and Sophia.
The community was originally spelled with two separate words, “why not”. Around 1860, residents living in the fertile heart of central North Carolina had no name for their home.
But when the United States post office planned to put down roots in the area, the townpeople convened to decide on a name. Debate ensued: why not name it this? Why not name it that? This discussion dragged on until one frustrated local butted in and said, “why not name the town why not let’s go home?” Ambivalence win the day.
